Choosing Your College Classes Can Be a Challenge

If you want to earn a degree, the first thing to do if you have attended college before, is to gather records and transcripts. If you plan to enroll in the same school, you probably won't have to retake them. If you plan to enroll in a different school, speak with an academic adviser to find out if the credits will transfer.

Can You Earn CLEP Credits?

The College Level Examination Program, or CLEP, allows you to earn college credits by taking exams. For example, if you took several years of Spanish in high school, you may be able to earn college Spanish credits by passing a CLEP exam. Passing CLEP exams is less expensive than taking equivalent college classes, and helps you to accelerate the pace of your degree.

Consider Majors that Interest You

If you are just starting college, it's OK if you don't know what to major in. Your adviser can help you choose classes that will work with a variety of different majors. If you have a major in mind, check your college catalog to see which classes you will be required to take and what their prerequisites are. You can complete many prerequisites during your freshman or sophomore year.

Do You Work Full or Part Time?

If you are working and going to school, it may take you more time to earn a degree, but that's OK. It's never too late to get your college degree. A good academic adviser can be tremendously helpful in planning out your course of study. You may not be able to take a full course load every semester, but you can make steady progress toward a degree even if you have a job.

Online Classes Can Be Very Useful

Online classes are becoming increasingly popular because of their convenience. Working people find online classes to be very helpful due to their flexibility. An online college course could be just the thing to round out a semester's coursework. You have to have initiative to succeed in an online college course, but with motivation, you can learn just as much as in a traditional classroom.
